Why abbreviations cause mix-ups

Many abbreviations change with the seasons: New York is on EST in winter and EDT in summer, but most people write “EST” all year. Others are shared: IST is India, Ireland or Israel; CST is US Central or China; PST is US Pacific or the Philippines. Each page here says which reading it uses and shows the real time for today’s date. For more, read time zone abbreviations explained.

A 30-SECOND TOUR

Good timing starts here.

  1. See the time now.

Each time zone page shows the live time and which abbreviation is in effect today, such as EST or EDT.

  2. Convert a time.

On a conversion page, pick a date and time to see it in the other zone, with daylight saving applied for that date.

  3. Check the table.

The hour-by-hour table shows every hour of the day, now and after the next clock change.
