What is UTC?

UTC isn’t a local time zone. It’s the world’s reference time, used for aviation, shipping, weather, computer systems and scheduling across time zones. Every time zone is defined as an offset from it, such as UTC−5 or UTC+5:30.

UTC: quick answers

Does UTC change for daylight saving time?

No. UTC never changes. Countries that use daylight saving move their offset from UTC instead, for example New York from UTC−5 to UTC−4.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For everyday use, yes: both are UTC+0. UTC is the precise standard; GMT is a time zone. Neither changes for daylight saving, but the UK leaves GMT for BST (UTC+1) in summer.

What is UTC in Eastern Time right now?

New York is 5 hours behind UTC right now (EST), and 4 hours behind from March 14.

A 30-SECOND TOUR

Good timing starts here.

  1. See the time now.

Each time zone page shows the live time and which abbreviation is in effect today, such as EST or EDT.

  2. Convert a time.

On a conversion page, pick a date and time to see it in the other zone, with daylight saving applied for that date.

  3. Check the table.

The hour-by-hour table shows every hour of the day, now and after the next clock change.
