How to count business days by hand

Business days are the days a business is normally open: usually Monday to Friday, minus public holidays. To count them yourself:

  1. Decide which dates count. Is the start date day one? Does the end date count? A 10-day notice period and a delivery estimate often answer this differently, so check the wording.
  2. Count the weekdays. Every full week adds five. Then count the weekdays in any partial week at each end.
  3. Remove public holidays that fall on a weekday. Use the holiday calendar of the country, and sometimes the state or region, where the work happens.
  4. Check observed days. When a holiday falls on a weekend, many countries give the nearest weekday off instead. In the United States, a Saturday holiday is usually observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after (US Office of Personnel Management).

A holiday counting example

From December 24 to December 29, 2026, with the end date excluded, there are five calendar days and three Monday–Friday weekdays: December 24, 25 and 28. With United States nationwide holidays excluded, Christmas Day is removed, leaving two business days.

Common mistakes

Counting business days in Excel and Google Sheets

Both use the same functions. =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) counts working days between two dates, including both ends; the optional holidays argument is a range of dates to skip. =NETWORKDAYS.INTL does the same with a weekend you choose, such as Friday–Saturday. To find a deadline instead, =WORKDAY(start, days, holidays) returns the date a given number of working days later. For a quick answer without a spreadsheet, use the calculator above, or use the add-days calculator.

December 2027 includes Friday, December 31, the federal holiday observed for New Year’s Day 2028. Counts are for the US federal calendar; your country, state or employer may differ. Choose your country above to count any range.

Are both dates included?

The start date is included and the end date is excluded by default. Select Include end date to count the final day too. A same-day range gives zero days by default; with the end date included it contributes one calendar day, and a business day only if eligible.

What counts as a business day?

This calculator uses Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. The holiday-adjusted total also removes nationwide public holidays for your chosen country, from WherOra’s verified holiday lists for 42 countries. Regional, employer-specific and alternative-workweek calendars are not included.

How many business days are in 2026?

2026 has 261 Monday–Friday weekdays. In the United States, removing the 11 federal holidays leaves 250 business days. Other countries have different holiday counts, so choose your country above and count January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027.

How many business days are in 2027?

2027 has 261 Monday–Friday weekdays. In the United States, removing the 12 weekday federal holidays, including Friday, December 31, 2027 (observed for New Year’s Day 2028), leaves 249 business days.

Does Excel's NETWORKDAYS include the start and end date?

Yes. NETWORKDAYS counts both the start date and the end date if they are working days, so it usually returns one more than this calculator's default. Select Include end date here to match it.

Are Saturdays business days?

Not in most countries. The usual business week is Monday to Friday, but Saudi Arabia, Israel and several other countries have a Friday–Saturday weekend. Banks, shops and couriers may also work Saturdays even where offices don't.

How is the holiday country selected?

WherOra suggests a country from your device time zone, not GPS. Confirm or change it before calculating, especially if you are planning for another country. Holiday lists load from WherOra; your dates stay on your device.

What if holiday data is unavailable?

Calendar-day and weekday totals still work, but the holiday-adjusted total is marked unavailable. Reload the page to retry. Holiday calculations support ranges spanning up to five calendar years, between 2021 and 2035.
