## Why abbreviations cause mix-ups

Many abbreviations change with the seasons: New York is on EST in winter and EDT in summer, but most people write “EST” all year. Others are shared: IST is India, Ireland or Israel; CST is US Central or China; PST is US Pacific or the Philippines. Each page here says which reading it uses and shows the real time for today’s date. For more, read [time zone abbreviations explained](https://wherora.com/guides/time-zone-abbreviations/).
